Offerings

Notation, Theory, and Arranging for Non-Classical Musicians

These private lessons are targeted at self-identified musicians coming from non-classical backgrounds.  Perhaps you are a singer-songwriter with fantastic literary ideas, but you feel stuck when it comes to composition, or working with a band.  Or maybe you’re a virtuoso in Ableton, but you have no solid grounding in the language you might need to communicate to a violinist or singer.  I can work with you to establish building blocks in reading music, theory as it applies to the actual music you listen to and make, and tools in both composition and arranging that are tailored to your individual practice.

You are welcome to bring an instrument or project to the lesson – please reach out for a consultation on how I can best support your learning!

Musical Literacy and Creativity for Non-Musicians and Un-Musicians

Private lessons targeted at creative folx with a love for musical creation, but either no formal training or too much formal training in music.  Great for professionals and non-professionals; perhaps you are a dancer or theatre maker who would like to improve skills for communicating ideas to musical collaborators.  Or, you are a true amateur, a lover, and you want to gain a deeper understanding for what you hear and why it moves you.  Also useful for Un-Musicians – folx who perhaps went through formal training at pre-professional or professional levels, and yearn to reconnect with their passion and creativity in a supportive, non-judgemental environment.

You are welcome to bring an instrument or project to the lesson – please reach out for a consultation on how I can best support your learning!

FEES

One-hour private lessons available at three price tiers:

$30.00

$50.00

$75.00

$200.00 for a 3x lesson package.

Please self-select an appropriate price for you.  My private kids’ lessons for middle-class families cost $75.00 per hour; lower prices are offered with the understanding that $75.00 can be a lot of money for artistic professionals, or anyone subsisting in low-wage jobs.  Please be honest with yourself and your budget about what you can and can’t afford.

I’m working on offering lower-cost and PWYC group classes (free for BIPOC); however these classes will take me some time to design and economically I can’t fill my schedule with them just yet.

About me:

I’m a composer, vocalist, and multidisciplinary collaborator with 10+ years professional experience and too many Fine Arts degrees (BFA, MFA).  I work across many different genres and collaborative disciplines; while my bread-and-butter is contemporary chamber music, I have also co-created acclaimed pieces of dance, theatre, and performance poetry.  I’ve scored two feature-length films, and one documentary which you can watch right now on CBC Gem: https://gem.cbc.ca/media/absolutely-canadian/s21e31?cmp=sch-orphaned.  My favourite projects are those in which I combine my love of poetry and song with my penchant for experimental arrangements, as heard occasionally in my experimental supergroup, Swanherds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJxuE_71qZk.  To all I do I bring an ethos of curiosity, care, and pleasure.  I hope to support you in cultivating your own sense of curiosity and delight, as you deepen your relationship with the Musical Arts.

I live and work in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where I co-habitate with an oversized tabby named Hamish.
